LIGHT OF MARS

PHOTOGRAPHY + MARSEILLE

My city lights

Photography + Marseille + Black and white

Lightofmars.com aka “Light Of Marseille” gathers black and white photographs taken mainly in Marseille or in the region, in Provence.

More sensitive to light and contrasts than to color, I have naturally felt the need to photograph mainly in black and white for several years, rediscovering the magic of my beginnings.

Color remains associated with my years as a professional photographer, it’s also good that it stays there!

Landscape, architecture and photography

Architecture is always the mark of power at any given time. Clerical power, economic or political power. Representing it in a distorted way, accentuating angles, oppositions, or isolating it, testifies as well to the aggressiveness as to the ridiculous character of these monsters of concrete, iron and glass.

Constable and Turner were the first to show how landscape painting can go beyond cutesy contemplation and mirror it to history. Not the history of the winners, nor that of the defeated, but the history that remains for future generations. it is no longer an obligation to do battle painting and satisfy the academic hierarchy in order to do history painting.

About nature and landscape, we have never understood so much the urgency of saving this planet. Cro-magnon saw much the same as us, but we may be the last to see it.

Marseille = contrasts

Marseille is a city with a strong character, that we love to love, and that we love to hate!

It is a city of contrasts, where delicacy rubs shoulders with violence, beauty rubs shoulders with ugliness, poverty rubs shoulders with wealth, generosity rubs shoulders with baseness.

I will regularly try to feed lightofmars with new pictures that illustrate these contrasts, not from a social photography perspective, but to testify to a place, a moment that reflects this contrast.

Being a witness of places and moments

Being a witness is not about watching others live, with the posture of a judge, a voyeur, or worse, with indifference.

Living inside the city and reaveling its contrasts here involves the choice of black and white, but if the contrast of social situations sometimes needs to be illustrated (by others), it first of all needs to be resolved!

Professional… and amateur photographer

Former trained at the Louis Lumière school in the early 90s, I was a professional photographer for 20 years.

I mainly worked in the Paris region for corporate communication, catalogs and advertising.

I now have another full-time job in Marseille, but remains a photographer in my heart, now as an amateur.

A new photographic life

Images on this website were taken since 2014, the date of my retraining and will be regularly fed by new creations.

Some images from the 90s will be posted regularly, depending on the scans i can make.
